Each year Sikh families cook and donate an astounding amount of free food and beverages to give to everyone who attends the event. After attending a Sikh parade in Canada, Didar Singh Bains was inspired to create a Sikh parade in his hometown of Yuba City, and he worked tirelessly to promote this event. The whole Sikh American community in Yuba City helped make this event successful by securing the necessary approvals from the city government, organize the complex logistics, and cooking and donating massive quantities of food for everyone who attends the festival.

The Sikh Parade was inaugurated in and has now grown to attract nearly , people each year from across the US and as far away as Canada, England, and India. The Sikh community of Yuba City welcomed tens of thousands of people from around the world to take part in the 42nd annual festival. This year, organizers took precautions like setting up sanitation stations and a health clinic offering vaccinations.

But social distancing was nearly impossible with roughly , attendees. Singh and his family were some of the many volunteers — feeding friends and strangers alike — for free.

Sarb Thiara, board president of the Sikh Temple in Yuba City, estimated that about , people would make their way to Tierra Buena Road over the three-day event to celebrate all the festival had to offer.

A few families even showed up for the first time. Wheatland resident Tabitha Hayward said the Nagar Kirtan was a good way to experience a different culture without traveling.
