Devil's Pool is on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. It stands almost midway across the mile-wide waterfall, close to Livingstone Island. It is accessible only on guided boat tours operated by Tongabezi Safaris. These leave from a launch on the Zambian bank of the Zambezi upstream of the falls.
But you should ideally be able to swim. In both instances, experienced guides are there to instruct and, if necessary, assist. These operate for seven months of the year, i. June to December. They include an optional dip in the pool, but only when the Zambezi is low enough to swim there safely.
This is usually from mid-August to end December, with access being most reliable in October and November, when the flow is weakest. Be aware, however, that seasonal levels vary from one year to the next, depending on how much and when it rained further upstream. The pool is closed to tourists when the flow is dangerously high, usually from 1 January to sometime in August. Essentially, yes. A less obvious cause for concern is the hippos and crocs that lurk in the Zambezi upriver of the waterfall.

Do you know if there's any chance at all that the water levels would be low and that the pool would be open!! I'm praying that by miracle the water levels will be lower than usual? Does this ever happen and the Devils swim is open as early as the end of July? May 30, Disspointed by: Tony Hi Julie - I am afraid that you are going to be disappointed, I have not known the Devils pool to open as early as July and this years water levels are no exception.
Sorry but it's still a great trip onto the island. Thats really expensive I was hoping if we could do hike up can I get a guide for that?
Oct 24, Potentially dangerous activity by: Tony They have sole rights to the island and the devils pool. It is a potentially very dangerous activity, as you can imagine you are swimming on the edge of a waterfall which is m high.
If the activity was not managed properly and anyone could go there without the correct safety procedures there would be several deaths per year. Is it possible tp swim in Angels Pool at that time of the year? That is close to absolute peak flood and the water is just far too high to be safe at all. September ?
Is there any chance that water levels will be lower than usually so tours will be organised? Thank you for your response. Regards, Britt. Sorry to inform you but it is definite that you will not be able to swim in the Devils pool in April, it closes on average in January as water levels rise.
They have opened several other pools not quite the same but similar which stretch the season into about March and then finally you can still visit the island till early April without any swimming. Jun 15, Devils pool by: Anonymous Hi, I will be traveling to Victoria falls on july 22nd and wondering the best way to swim in the devils pool on the 23rd please.
Jun 17, Making a booking by: Tony if you send an email to info victoriafalls-guide. Will it be possible to swim in the Devil's Pool? Do you have to do a tour or can you go alone?
Yes this year water levels are lower than normal but I very much doubt the pool will be open by the 18th July. If anything it will open around early to mid August. The Angels pool and Livingstone island tour are currently open so you can do those and they are worthwhile. You cannot do the tour on your own you have to go on an organised tour, as they take you there by boat.
Hope that helps. Jun 26, Devils Pool open tomorrow by: Tony My complete apologies, I got this wrong but I did contact the operators yesterday and they told me what I wrote in the previous post. Today they have announced that the Devils Pool will open tomorrow, so you are in luck. If you need to make a booking please email us on info victoriafalls-guide. I will be there from 5 to 7 Aug Jul 12, Already open by: Tony It is already open, low water levels this year have enabled it to open much earlier than normal.
Make sure you book well in advance. Jul 17, Angel's pool? Jul 17, Unfortunately not by: Tony The pools are changing as the water drops, so when the devils pool is open it means that the water is lower and the Angels pool is drier.
So in essence, sorry but no you can't do the Angels pool, when the Devils pools is open. Jul 29, best time of the day for devil's pool tour by: Cecilia Hello, I'm going to Victoria falls in October, I was wondering what time of the day is the best to go on the Devil's pool tour?
I would love to see rainbows. Aug 03, Morning trips best for rainbows by: Tony Hi Cecilia In October the you will see the best rainbows on the morning breezer trips. I would suggest the 9am one.
However, we want to go to Devil's Pool on the 14th of September. Would she be able to get to the Pool? Willing to use any measures: assist her, safety vest, help from guide Aug 16, Non swimmers are generally terrified by: Tony Hi Thierry Generally people who cannot swim are terrified to be in a big body of water where they have no control. This is her greatest worry, as crossing the water she will be assisted and her feet wil be able to touch the ground,.
Does this mean there will be a chance it will open early again next summer, ? Sep 30, Every year is different by: Tony Hi Hannah No it does not mean that it will be open at the same time next year.
This last season we had an unusually bad rainfall which meant the Zambezi levels were very low. Last time they were that low was in Although it is not guaranteed, average to good rainfall is predicted for this upcoming season, so if that is the case the devils pool wont open till August. Angels pool in a normal year opens in July.
Aug 28, How to arrange the Devils swim by: Tony Hi Tasia If you are staying in Botswana then we will need to arrange a transfer for you unless you have your own vehicle, in which case you would need to drive to Livingstone. The Devils swim departs from the Royal Livingstone Hotel and there are 5 trips throughout the day. If you have a look at this webapge there are more details Devils Swim. If you send us an email on info victoriafalls-guide. There are different prices for the different trips which can be seen on the above link.
What is the likelihood of swimming in there? At which dates the pool has been opened over the past few years and what is the latest opening ever please? Many thanks in advance! Sep 26, Devils swim opening dates by: Tony Hi John This year the devils swim opened 12th August, can't remember exact dates for years previously but it has always opened in mid to late August. This year water is particularily low but rains for upcoming year are also forecast to be not so good.
I think it is almost certian that you will be able to Swim at the beginning of September. Please remember to book well in advance, I can't tell you how many disappointed people we have seen this year who thought they would arrive and book onsite only to find that the tours were fully booked. People have come all the way here and gone away with out doing it, purely because they didn't book in advance. Is it possible to swim in the Devil's Pool? Answer: by Tony That's going to be a bit tight, although the Livingstone Island normally opens in aarly July, the devils swim doesn't open usually until late August, this does vary every year though.
If you could leave it for another 10 days you would stand a better chance. Failing that still book on the Livingstone Island tour as it is just an amazing viewpoint of the Falls and what they seem to do nowadays is swim in different pools according to the water level, maybe not right on the edge like the Devils pools but still quite exhilarating. Nov 21, Devils swim closed in March by: Tony Dear Vaibhav Firstly let me apologise for the very late response to your question, Boo and I have been travelling through the Zambezi valley for the last 4 weeks and have had no internet connection.
We are now back in Vic Falls. In answer to your questions. I am sorry about that, but if you want to do the devils swim you need to be coming between August and early January.
Swimming in Devil's Pool by Adriana Spain I'll be in Victoria at the end of the month and was wondering if we will be allowed to swim in the devil's pool at this time of year Devils pool of victoria falls what is the distance from Zimbabwe side of Victoria falls to devil' pool of Victoria falls on Zambia side?
Feb 08, Distance to The Devils Swim by: Tony Not exactly sure of what you mean here, but I am presuming you mean how far is it to drive there. The departure point for the Devils swim is the Royal Livingstone hotel in Zambia, this is about 1km from the Zambian border post. So from the Victoria Falls entrance gate in Zimbabwe to the Royal Livingstone it is probably a total distance of 3kms, you can walk this or take taxis.
From Royal Livingstone they take you by boat to Livingstone island, where you can do the Devils swim at certain times of year. Feb 07, Devils pool closed by: Tony Hi Kim It is very unlikely that the Livingstone island tour or the Devils swim will still be open at the end of March. The water level of the Zambezi will be just to high by then. The devils pool closed around the beginning of January as normal, they then swim in another pool not right on the edge for a bit longer, but this will also be closed by the end of Feb.
Swimming in Devils Pool in September? Obviously impossible to predict exactly the water level of the river but I think the likelyhood is high for you to be able to swim at the beginning of September. How many visitors a year to Devils Pool? However this is a bit of a grey area. Firstly yes your passports would be stamped by both Zimbabwean and Zambian Authorities and if you are on UK passports then you will need to buy double entry visa and day tripper into Zambia as you have mentioned.
Secondly - The only people interested in the Yellow fever are the South African immigration, it is an SA regulation only.
If you fly out from Zambia, The Zambians won't let you board the plane without a certificate. The South Africans have enforced that regulation. However if you fly out of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabweans have no concern for the yellow fever so they don't check and you are completely allow to get on the plane without a certificate Now the grey area Once you land back in South Africa it is "possible" that the SA immigration will question you for your yellow fever, but they are not going to send you back because you haven' got one.
I have done it and was never asked for the certificate. I have asked are clients and they too have not been asked. But it is possible that they could ask for it. Sorry I can't be more definitive, but its kind of a desicion you have to make. If it were me I and I was just going into Zambia for the day I wouldn't get the vaccination. Jun 04, Victoria Falls in September by: Tony Hi Kapil Every year is different from the last so it is kind of like predicting the future, but we can estimate water levels compared to the last year.
This year the water is much lower an normal, Livingstone island has just opened on the 1st June whereas it normally only opens in July, so that being an indication I would say that on 3rd of September the Devils pool will almost certainly be open. The level of the river does keep dropping so the water on the 20th will be less, however still impressive if you are viewing from the Zimbabwean side. I would not delay your trip I would go on the 3rd. Jun 05, Thanks by: Anonymous Thanks a lot Tony.
Your advice was very helpful and I will be coming on the 3rd. Possibly I'll soon contact you again for advice on various attractions.
Devil's swim and Chobe day trip by Dmitry Moscow Dear friends, can you please confirm - as there is a full water at the end of April and there is no excusrions to devil's swim on Livingstone island, correct?
You might also find that it is more expensive when you are up there. When paying in the Falls you either have to pay by cash or if paying by credit card they will charge about a 2. Apr 19, Chobe safari by: Dmitry Hi Tony, thanks! May 07, Devils pool by: Eliza Hi! I'm in Victoria Falls from 27th July till 17th of august. Will I be able to swim in the devils pool? Thanks for the answer.
Eliza Answer by: Tony The Livingstone island will definately be open by then, but the Devils pool normally only opens at the end of August, this obviously varies from year to year depending on water level. I would still book the Livingstone Island tour and see whats possible as they do offer different pools for swimming in at the different water levels. I am extremely interested in the Devils pool and was wondering if it would still be open then?
Also, is it better to stay in Zimbabwe to experience the falls and make a day trip to the devils pool? I have a singapore passport so i think visas are not required. Would you need to book ahead to do the devils pool? Or can we hire a tour guide while there? I read that there are independent tour guides who can take you to the devils pool and you get to spend more time in it rather than only 15mins to take photos.
Sep 08, Devils swim by: Tony Hi Lav The Devils pool normally closes around about the 1st week of January, varies every year depending on the level of the Zambezi river, so it's going to be touch and go as to whether you will be able to swim in the pool. Howvere the Livingstone island tour does still carry on operating around March and they do use other safer pools to swim in as the river rises.
